Two types of coaching sessions are available. You may choose to learn how to be a better coach of others’ work or you may choose to be coached on your storytelling. Each participant is guaranteed a one hour and fifteen minute session during the weekend. You’ll also learn by observing the sessions of other participants. All participants will receive training on the basic principles of effective coaching. Why should I attend and what happens during my 1 hour 15 minute session? About learning how to be a better coach of others’ work: Learning how to coach effectively is valuable for anyone who helps others with their creative work. Teachers who help students with their speaking or writing, artists who conduct residencies, storytelling guild members, and anyone who wants to learn how to respond more effectively to others work will benefit. For the first thirty minutes of your session, you will listen to a brief presentation by another participant and coach them on their work. For the next forty-five minutes, the workshop leader(s) will coach you on your coaching. About being coached on your storytelling: Receiving coaching on your storytelling can benefit any storyteller (new or experienced), pastors, speakers, librarians, and others who want to tell stories. You may receive coaching on a story, a showcase presentation, a residency or workshop plan, or any other aspect of your work — you determine the specific focus of your session. At the beginning of your session, you will present your work. During whatever time remains, the workshop leader(s) will coach you on your work. Example: you tell a 20-minute story, 55 minutes remain for coaching; you tell a 50-minute story, 25 minutes remain for coaching. Who are the workshop leaders? Doug Lipman is a key figure in the New England storytelling revival. Doug is known throughout the United States as a performer, coach, author and teacher. His publications include The Storytelling Coach: How to Listen, Praise, and Bring Out People’s Best. Pam McGrath, from Atlanta, Georgia, is known throughout the United States as a humorist, storyteller, workshop leader, emcee and coach. She has led workshops for the Network of Biblical Storytellers, the National Storytelling Conference, other organizations and numerous private, multi-day workshops. Doug and Pam have led numerous workshops together, developing pioneering ways of tandem coaching providing participants with more insight and support than they could provide working separately. The Schedule: The Coaching Extravaganza begins promptly at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (same in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville & New York City) on Friday, January 4th and will end by 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 6th. Participants are expected to participate in the entire weekend workshop. You may arrive as early as 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 3rd and leave as late as 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 7h. The Cost: $320 per participant includes the entire weekend workshop plus food and housing (room sharing expected; bed sharing voluntary). Meals included are Thursday light supper, Friday, Saturday and Sunday breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Monday breakfast. Note: If you want both a session of help to improve your coaching and a session of coaching on your storytelling, send $570 for both sessions. If you want a double length (2 _ hours) session of coaching on your telling so you can work on a longer piece, send $570. How to Register: To reserve your workshop space, make your check payable to Scheherazade’s Legacy and mail it to Mary Hamilton, 65 Springhill Road, Frankfort, KY 40601-9211. The weekend is limited to twelve participants. We need to receive your payment by December 10, 2001. We also need to know: 1) how to reach you — email, phone/fax, postal mail; 2) any dietary restrictions or requests, 3) any mobility restrictions, 4) any other special needs, 5) whether you are willing to share a bed with someone of your same gender, 6) what day you plan to arrive — Thursday evening or Friday morning; 7) what day you plan to leave — Sunday evening or Monday morning. Location and Travel: The workshop will take place at Storytellers Riverhouse in Bethlehem, Indiana. Bethlehem is a very small town located on the Ohio River. It is so small the nearest place to buy anything except postage stamps is eight miles away! Bethlehem is located 45 minutes northeast of Louisville, Kentucky and 30 minutes southwest of Madison, Indiana. Driving directions will be sent to all participants. We can provide airport pick-up if you fly into Louisville, KY before 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and depart on Monday after 10:00 a.m. Idea for Kentucky artists: The Kentucky Arts Council offers Individual Artist Professional Development Grants to "fund activities that help artists further their careers." One example of an expense eligible for support is "attending workshops, conferences, seminars, and master classes, including travel and per diem." The grants will fund up to _ of the project’s actual cost. Storytelling artists could benefit from coaching on their storytelling. Other Kentucky artists, including storytellers, could benefit from learning how to be a better coach of others’ work, especially if the artist regularly works with students and needs to respond to their work. Kentucky artists who participate in showcases might want to use a coaching session to work on their showcase presentations. Any of these activities would further the artist’s career.
